Apply basic principles of protection in explosive atmospheres
Scope
This Unit of Competence covers the basic principles of protection in explosive atmospheres of plant and machinery. There is no minimum level of technical education applicable for this unit of Competence. Competence in this unit shall be assessed in combination with, or after gaining other competence required by a given industry or enterprise for plant or machinery operation or installations, maintenance or service functions
This unit of competency is based on various parts of IEC 60079 series.
Assessment of training and competence:
Each applicant will be required to demonstrate their competence through theoretical tests relevant to the competence applied for:
A rigorous theoretical exam will take the form of both Selected Response and Constructed Response questions with the Selected Response including a section of compulsory questions which require 100%.
The duration of a knowledge test shall be based on the following:
- Selected Response Questions – 2 minutes per answer
- Constructed Response Questions – 3 minutes per short answer, 5 minutes per extended answer and 3 minutes per calculation.
The following is an example of the number of questions and duration of assessment for Unit 001 where competencies in Flameproof Ex d, Increased Safety Ex e and Intrinsically Safe Ex i have been requested. The assessment time is based on an average of 2 minutes for selected response questions and 4 minutes for constructed response question.

Where further concepts are required to be assessed, the questions in 5.1 through to 5.6 will be reduced accordingly to ensure and exam of approximately 4 hours.
